The word Nahual derives from nahualli which, in Nahuatl, means "hidden". However, it is a term that incorporates other meanings such as disguise, deceive and hide.
THE PROTECTED OF TEZCATLIPOCA.
In the Mexica belief system, Tezcatlipoca was the god of the night, obsidian, the north, and witchcraft, among other concepts. This explains, in part, the fact that he was related to the nahuales, who were said to be his proteges. Tezcatlipoca himself, it was believed, took the form of a jaguar, just as Quetzalcóatl appeared as a feathered serpent and Huitzilopochtli as a hummingbird. This suggests that the concept behind the nahuales is based on these divine transmutations.
I did not know the meaning of the word "Nahual" now it makes a lot of sense why they are called that.
