NAHUALES

Anecdote with nahuales

Image
Two months ago I was at the house of one of my aunts in the town of zimatlán de Álvarez Oaxaca, it was about 12 at night, when we began to hear that the dogs were crying a lot, when we noticed these sounds we looked out the window and outside there was a very large dog sitting with a cigarette. The next day a neighbor explained to us that they are people who become animals at night and are called Nahuales.

NAHUAL.

For the Otomi, the term "nahual" designates three different realities:  1._the alter ego of the human soul. 2._the healer transformed into an animal.  3._ a specific animal that endangers the lives of newborns during the first months of their existence.

My great-great-grandfather was talking about the Nahuales.

Since the great-great-grandparents, the legend of Nahual exists and has been told from generation to generation. Ancient people say that the Nahual was a dark, mythological and very powerful spectrum, since it possessed sorcerer and even possibly supernatural gifts. Their origin was in Tlaxcala, and they say that in the times of Tlaxcallán, these beings used to be protected by Tezcatlipoca, a pre-Hispanic god of war and sacrifice.

The legend of the Nahual, a story that will envelop you

The legend of the Nahual says that they had the ability to transform into different animals such as wolves, coyotes, horses, vultures, frogs, axolotls, donkeys or turkeys, but all with an appearance of malice. The grandparents comment that if the Nahual was injured while he was in his animal form, when he became human, he kept the wound in the same area where he was injured, so they could realize who one of these beings was. But that's not all, since it is said that when going out at night, the Nahuales needed to carry a leather belt and a used garment, this so that they could return to their humanoid appearance.

How to beat a Nahual

To get rid of him, you must go looking for him one night when he goes out to steal, chase him. As the nahual runs in a zig zag, you must chase it and every fifteen steps, drop a crucifix to force it to run in circles. When you've done this three times, shoot him.  Before dying he will recover his human form and you will know who he was. Recommendation if you are alone at night do not try to defend yourself and better run and do not stop running until you reach a church or a nearby house.

The characteristics of a Nahual

1-. He can only transform at night and in the morning when the sun rises he is human again 2-.Their mission is to protect the town where it belongs, as told by the legends of Tlaxcala 3-.If you manage to hurt the nahual in its animal state, when it becomes human it will suffer the same damage where it was injured 4-.Some are Nahuales by birth, while others are believed to have been converted as a result of making a pact.

The Nahual the Tlaxcala

Legend has it that one night some men left the pulquería in Santa Ana Chiautempan, Tlaxcala at 2 am, that was a cold and closed winter night. ¡Suddenly! On a nearby path, a menacing and huge black wolf with large jaws blocked their way. One of those ranchers drew his pistol and shot him in the leg, the wounded wolf managed to flee. Frightened, they returned to the pulqueria and the manager told them that this wolf was actually a very rich man who lives in the town. One who had made a pact with the devil, who at night turns into an animal to steal cattle, was the feared nahual. Horrified, he told them that this man would surely go to have some pulques right there in the morning after he healed his wound. Upon hearing this, those men lost their drunkenness.

According to several ancient civilizations, it is believed that at birth, each individual has an animal as a spirit, which takes the role of protector and guide.  In some cases, these creatures only manifest as a figure that appears in dreams.

THE PROTECTED OF TEZCATLIPOCA.

Image
In the Mexica belief system, Tezcatlipoca was the god of the night, obsidian, the north, and witchcraft, among other concepts. This explains, in part, the fact that he was related to the nahuales, who were said to be his proteges. Tezcatlipoca himself, it was believed, took the form of a jaguar, just as Quetzalcóatl appeared as a feathered serpent and Huitzilopochtli as a hummingbird. This suggests that the concept behind the nahuales is based on these divine transmutations.

The word Nahual derives from nahualli which, in Nahuatl, means "hidden". However, it is a term that incorporates other meanings such as disguise, deceive and hide.
